A regular indoor refrigerator will fail outdoors, quickly. Florida’s climate is one of the most demanding environments for any appliance. UL outdoor-rated units are built for these conditions.
Indoor refrigerators vent from the rear or bottom and require open air clearance. Built-in outdoor units are front-venting, designed to sit flush in an island cabinet without overheating.
Florida summer temperatures can push 100°F+ in direct sun. Outdoor-rated compressors are engineered to cool efficiently where indoor compressors overheat and fail.
Florida’s humidity, rain exposure, and coastal salt air will corrode standard appliances. UL outdoor-rated units are sealed and built to withstand year-round exposure.
Using an indoor unit outside voids the manufacturer warranty. Summerset’s Gold Standard Warranty on outdoor-rated units is valid for outdoor installation.
Summerset’s outdoor refrigerators carry UL outdoor ratings, an independent safety certification validating the unit is tested and approved for outdoor installation.
#304 stainless steel is the commercial-grade standard for outdoor applications. It resists rust, handles UV exposure, and stays clean far longer than lower-grade finishes.
For an outdoor kitchen, choose an outdoor-rated 15″ or 24″ refrigerator. The 15″ is the right choice when island space is limited; the 24″ gives you the most storage and is ideal for larger kitchens and heavy entertaining. The 22″ compact refrigerator is for indoor kitchens only and must not be installed outdoors. We discuss the right size for your specific island during the design consultation.
If you primarily drink one type of wine and want to store it at a consistent serving temperature, a single zone cooler is the right choice. If you regularly drink both reds and whites and want each at its ideal temperature, the dual zone gives you two independently controlled compartments in the same unit. The 24″ dual zone is the most capable option for dedicated wine collectors.
We strongly advise against it. Indoor refrigerators are not designed for outdoor ambient temperatures, humidity, or built-in cabinet installation. They require rear air clearance, their compressors overheat in Florida’s heat, and the warranty is voided when used outdoors. Summerset’s UL outdoor-rated units are specifically engineered and certified for outdoor installation.
Most white wines, rosés, and sparkling wines are best served between 44°F and 50°F. Most red wines are best served between 55°F and 65°F. For storage rather than immediate serving, a consistent 55°F works well for most varietals. The dual zone models let you maintain different temperatures for reds and whites simultaneously.
Yes. Outdoor refrigerators require a standard 110V/120V electrical outlet. This is typically coordinated during the kitchen design phase so the island is wired correctly before installation. We build the island with the proper cutout and location, the electrical connection is handled by a licensed electrician, which the customer coordinates.
